When it comes to hiring employees, how do you create a job description that makes sense both to the business and to the employee?
As an entrepreneur, you find it rewarding to build your business and make your dreams a reality. You may not mind the long hours or wearing multiple hats. However, an employee will have different motivations.
An employee wants a job that provides feelings of accomplishment or opportunities to collaborate. They will also want to know how they are doing, feel appreciated, and want feedback.

Job Description
A job description is a written explanation that outlines a job and should include:
- Job title – Choose a title that is attractive and reflective of the role.
- Job function & role – Outline a detailed description of the function of the employee in the business such as member of sales department.
- Organizational placement – Describe where the employee falls in the organizational placement, who they report to, who they collaborate with, and who provides support for them.
- Key responsibilities & projects: Define 7-9 key responsibilities and projects.
- Authority: Define decision-making limits, management, and boundaries of the job. Make it clear what they are authorized to do on their own without consulting a superior first.
- Short & long term expected results: Describe the results expected from the employee to be successful in the job, both in the short and long term.
- Growth opportunities: Include a short training plan detailing what the employee needs to learn for the given tasks and opportunities to build up their knowledge for future advancement.
A meaningful job description takes careful consideration and will take time to create. If it is done right, it is more likely that the employee will find the job meaningful. When you find the right employee, it’s okay to adjust the description to make it more suitable. Once the right employee and job are matched, your business is one step closer to growth.
