The Decisive Step for Creating Growth
For a business to create more value than what a single person can produce, the only way forward is to hire the next employee. How do you go about recruiting and hiring the next employee?
Next Employee Examples
To begin, evaluate what needs to be done to cover the investment in a new employee. Usually in a startup, the first employee is one of the following:
- Bookkeeper & office assistant who can save you time to focus on services and sales. To be profitable, you need to increase turnover by at least the amount of the new employee’s salary.
- Service employee who produces or delivers your product. To be profitable, the employee needs to be able to earn their salary.
- Salesperson who takes over sales work, cultivates new markets or sells new products. To be profitable, the salesperson needs to generate enough sales to cover their own salary.

The Recruitment Process
The recruitment process involves planning and delegating the following steps:
Before Recruitment
- Employee budget involves estimating the costs and benefits
- Craft a job description detailing the tasks and goals
- Assess what type of person the company needs and craft an employee profile
- Create a job description and post the job
During Recruitment
- Prepare questions for the job interview
- During the interview, assess competencies and personality
- Ask for at least three references
- Consider asking favorite candidates to do a test job
- Evaluate the candidates, make a job offer, and negotiate
- Use standard contracts and consider a probation period
After Recruitment:
- Dedicate time for introduction and training
- Delegate and have weekly check-in meetings
- Ask your bookkeeper or accountant to help setup the employee payroll & salary
- Plan employee reviews every 6 to 12 months
- Consider how the employee can develop with the job
- Work planning, education & training, performance evaluation, and reviews.
Next Steps
Once you have hired your first employee, you can determine what type of employee you want to hire next and calculate the needed turnover for profitability. It would also be beneficial to start crafting the next job description.
